Making our apartment a home…

25 Jan

In our last apartment, we chose to paint the walls.  For the year we lived there, I adored those red and grey walls.  The day we moved out, I realized I hated nothing more.  I swear my mom and I put 20 coats of paint on between those two walls.  And would you believe the red covered right up.  It was the grey that we couldn’t cover.  It just kept soaking up the paint.

…after that, I swore that I would NEVER paint another apartment.  And that I’d have to be talked into allowing holes in the walls for pictures.

I followed that rule for quite some time in our new place.

Then, along came Pinterest.

And Natalie, over at Natty Michelle, blogged about her amazing Vintage Gallery Wall.

And I realized that, whether we own it or not, we need to work to make wherever we’re living a home.  I want to love walking in to our home every day after work, and I want to love our space.

I still haven’t painted any walls, but I’ve put in quiiiite a few nail holes.  I’ve created two gallery walls in our apartment. One in the living area, and one in our dining area.

At first, I drew inspiration from symmetry.  I love clean, simple lines.

Then, I began to realize that I was really digging a more ‘controlled chaos’ look.  I like the idea of a gallery wall filled with different types of media–family photos, art prints, etc.

I feel like it is important that we’re surrounded by things that make us happy.  Maybe it’s a picture of a great memory, and it might be a print that just makes me smile.  After many hours of official research (on Pinterest, obviously), I set out to gather items and began creating our gallery wall.
